Abstract

Ny years of primary and secondary school teaching have led me to believe that if new ideas or frameworks are to be useful to teachers, their introduction should(i) not only provide an outline of the nature of the ideas but a160 give examples of the ways in which they could be of practical use to teachers(ii) present both outline and examples in such as way as to equip teachers to generate further applioations that would be relevant to the particular challenges and resources of their own situation. This paper has been planned to meet both of these criteria. After a brief introduction to the field of sociolinguistics two focal areas will be described and their relevance to first language teachers discussed.
