Linguistic theory and second language acquisition: How not to lose sight of the wood for the trees

Abstract


This paper deals with the syntax of so-called possessive constructions in Afrikaans. More specifically, an attempt will be made to describe the grammatical structure of the general construction (1) within the framework of the Chomskyan principles-and-parameters approach to the study of language. 1 The construction (1) -- henceforth, the se-construction -- is illustrated by the phrases in (2).
